Background and Philosophy

Thank you for your interest in my blog, and I hope that you find it valuable. After working as a classroom teacher in public schools for over twenty years, in 2022 I stepped away from teaching to dedicate more time to supporting my mom. In this blog, I hope to share some of my experiences in a way that others find helpful and engaging.

My choice of teaching as a career was inspired by the very positive experiences I was fortunate to have as a student. My most influential teachers trusted me, were interested in me as an individual, and acted as guides in my learning. Like the teachers I had, I value learning experiences that focus on guiding a person's individual growth both intellectually and personally. I value giving students a voice, allowing them to make choices, encouraging creativity, and individualizing their education.

Most recently, I taught science, Spanish, and a project-based class to middle school students at The Museum School in San Diego. My project-based class was called Building Community and encompassed student leadership and service learning.

Before teaching middle school students, I spent many years teaching grades three to five, much of that time in multi-grade classrooms. My first position as a classroom teacher was at The South Shore Charter Public School in Massachusetts, a school emphasizing project-based learning, mixed-grade classes, and entrepreneurship. I later taught in the UNIDOS dual-language program in the Boston area. My teaching experience includes project-based learning, weaving the arts into core classes, K-8 science, Spanish-English dual-immersion, Spanish language, environmental education, ESL in Spain, Brazil, and the US, and volunteer work in the US and India with Asha for Education.

My educational philosophy and approach to teaching are heavily influenced by a progressive elementary education at George C. Soule School in Freeport, Maine, and my undergraduate education at Bennington College in Vermont. I hold a B.A. in Science and M.Ed. in Elementary Education and Creative Arts in Learning.
